![]() But even though I’ve always hated slow books where boring stuff happens most of the time, I never felt bored with these. It might not be the kind of book for everyone. Layer after layer is peeled back from the plot. And all linked up into the “Grail” – a virtual reality of mind numbing complexity and realism. Questions and actions that cut to the very root of life itself. The solid Bonnie Mae Simpkins – the mother figure and seemingly the only one capable of making the Wicked Tribe listen to her! Felix Jongleur – the old heartless asshole who wants to live forever, is pathologically afraid of death, and is willing to sacrifice anything and everything to achieve his goal. ![]() The lost Paul who finds his true nature like Odysseus. The blind frenchwoman Martine – terrified of the psychopath Dread whom she comes into contact with. His quest reaches a success he could never even have fathomed. !Xabbu (That’s not a spelling mistake – the exclamation mark is part of his name), the centered Bushman who’s trying to preserve whatever he can of his almost dead culture. The “Wicked Tribe” – a bunch of children represented as flying monkeys. ![]() Characters like the dying kid Orlando Gardiner who wants to be a hero in the best tradition of the Lord of the Rings. To see all these themes come together in a fantasy/science fiction novel thrills me no end. I must admit these questions are of interest to me because I’ve been thinking of them myself for years. Is a virtual copy truly “us”? If no such thing as a “soul” exists, then who are we exactly? If we transfer our consciousness into a machine, are we merely killing ourselves and creating a new person, or is that person us? Do we die each time we go to sleep and awaken as someone else? We see themes of virtual immortality, deep philosophical questions concerning our our very identity. From the time they were completely unaware of the “Grail” network, to becoming an intricate part of it. I’ve grown so attached to the characters! When I look back now at the very first books, I’m astounded at how far I’ve traveled with them. Even if the technology for this kind of thing doesn’t exist today, there’s no reason why it couldn’t exist in the future. The “fantasy” as you might call it is extremely grounded in reality. Tad Williams takes the virtual reality bull by the horns and pushes it as far as it will go. So it’s more like eight books instead of 4.Įven though it features a tight cast of characters, the scope is epic. I mean seriously, it’s almost as if each was twice the length of a regular novel. Even though you might say that virtual reality fiction has been around for a long time, I’ve never read anything quite like this. Nor is it like any other science fiction story either. They blew me away.įirst of all, this isn’t like any other “fantasy” book you’ve encountered. I filed them away for later because the first volumes weren’t on the shelf. They were on the bookshelf and I didn’t know why they caught my attention. I first encountered these 4 books when Anupa and I went on a cruise to Cozumel, Mexico.

![]() Now is the virtual age and so we have virtual sticky notes. Writing everything down is a good way to organize things you need to know but there is no need to hassle with paper and pen or even Stick-It notes anymore. Though it’s true that never before in history was our day-to-day memory tested with such an enormous amount of information that it had to absorb and retain in a very short period of time. MAJOR improvement over what we had before and largely aligned to what we get from Mural.Human short-term memory is notoriously frail, as everyone who’s ever misplaced their keys knows. So, all in all, I’m liking what I’m seeing. Let’s get ink everywhere in the platform, as it is much more collaborative than typing. There are still a few odd places you can’t ink, like in the title of a template, or “text” boxes. Microsoft, I still don’t like loading whiteboards… You should be able to have someone presenting and the whiteboard be available at the same time vs. needing to load it and un-load it from the consciousness. Why not make it something that is ALWAYS there, like the flip chart in the room vs. I still really want the whiteboard to function like a persistent background asset vs. What are we doing here continuing to have Whiteboard and OneNote? Can’t these converge at some point? Where is the plan for that? Can you imagine how much easier a real-time Visio integration would be? It is so much faster to draw an architecture than to make a Visio diagram. I’ll sing your praises forever if you do this. Let’s hit them again one more time.Ĭome on now… create a stinking Visio integration. In some of these cases it just makes sense, or would be very helpful to target groups. Here is the list of things it still cannot do which continue to be annoying or just features I’d really like to have. You can see multiple people editing in the Whiteboard and it brings a flavor of collaboration to the experience. There are a few times when I wanted something behind the interface. ![]() You sometimes want a grid, or a… triangle? I’m not sure I understand all the choices, but still, I’m glad to have the ability to do it. I’m looking forward to “inking” from my mobile device in the future. This new Microsoft Whiteboard is much more cross compatible and allows for a consistent experience. The old version had a problem of only working certain places. This was something MURAL did pretty well, was the big board zoom in / zoom out experience. This seems to naturally let you do that and gives you an ability to see the board at scale. It didn’t have a true “big board” feel and it was hard to find your way around. The old version was clunky to zoom in and out. This may seem simple, but is a nice advantage as you stack up historical whiteboards you’ve used. In addition to it being connected to a meeting it can not have its own persistent name. The new Whiteboard App lets you name the Whiteboard for later reference. Perhaps a “Concurrency Brainstorming Framework” I’m looking forward to using these with customers in collaborative ways where we brainstorm together or talk about ideas with a structured start. The new template implementation fully respects ink and exists as frameworks for your engagements. The old templates had terrible implementation and poor ink recognition. A nice improvement but I’d like to see the header addressed. In the grouped sticky note template the top header seems to be text only, which is a bit odd. You’ll notice in the individual sticky notes I can ink on them pretty easily. The old Whiteboard app couldn’t recognize ink in the sticky notes. To truly capture the idea of translating sticky notes with collaboration/pen to a digital setting you need to recognize ink from a variety of sources. That said, if I did need to click-off the Whiteboard, it still needs to re-load vs. I don’t find myself seeking to use the “App Experience” as the Teams experience isn’t as clunky anymore and it isn’t frequently clicking off the UI, causing a re-load. It no longer does this and it feels that the Teams native experience is better integrated than it was before. I hate that the Teams experience frequently would ask me to “Open in the App”. ![]() ![]() Let’s talk about all the improvements you’re sure to be talking about if you ever used the old Whiteboard app. Then… something amazing happened… Microsoft released their new Whiteboard platform and TOTALLY REDEEMED THEMSELVES… (dumb and dumber fans rejoice). This was a pretty accurate view of the capabilities of Microsoft Whiteboard (at the time). I recently wrote a blog on 5 Things I Love About Microsoft Whiteboard and 5 Things I Hate. His attempts-"hanshotfirst," "covfefe," "feelthebern"-are of the moment, yet already dated, which is probably inevitable with a movie as relentlessly topical as Unfriended: Dark Web. Dark Web opens with Matias, or MattyFastWheelz (Matias O'Brien), trying to guess the password on the new laptop he filched from a coffee shop Lost & Found (he tells his friends he got it from Craigslist). Unfriended: Dark Web attempts a more realistic approach, excising the supernatural and replacing it with a super hacker able to listen in on any conversation, expunge chat records and manipulate reality as he sees fit. Computer stuff happened because, well, because billie227 could do whatever she wanted. In the first Unfriended, the ghost of a high school girl dead of suicide uses her spectral computer powers to kill her classmates via Skype chat. Dark Web may be gimmicky, but the peculiar restraints of the screen movie, plus the real-time narrative, create strange new ways to experience a story. But despite conceptual objections, first to Unfriended, and now its sequel Unfriended: Dark Web, there's just no getting around how much fun I've had with both movies. The entire concept feels like a cynical experiment, asking viewers to find satisfaction in blurry video chat windows, text messages and the fake life of the desktop environment, instead of the real and hyperreal possibilities of the medium. ![]() ![]() ![]() The "screen movie," which constrains cinema to the contents of a computer screen, is a micro-budget solution masquerading as a horror subgenre (similar to the nauseous decade of found footage we're only now escaping). But YOU are not Steve Hullfish either, so this other review might be perfect for you.įirst, I have to say that I am reviewing Magic Bullet Suite running as a plugin in Avid Media Composer 8, on a MacBookPro 15” Retina running Yosemite. At the end of the review, I will switch back to playing myself and tell you why it doesn’t really work for Steve Hullfish. To review the product fairly I have to play the part of some other video editor. But there are a ton of happy and successful and artistic and creative video and film editors out there who are not me, so I need to review the product for them, not me. I’m pretty sure Red Giant did this with Magic Bullet Suite because they’ve been a popular and successful brand for a while. Similarly, when you design an app or a plug-in you have to know who your audience is. Similarly, I’ve seen videos done for products for moms with newborns that looked like skateboard videos: whip pans, grungy graphics, hand-held shots… it just hit the wrong audience. If you’re going to make an awesome skateboarding or surfing or BMX video, you don’t approach it with detailed schematics, cost ratio benefits detailed in wondrous pie charts and an explanation of how to best deal with medical coverage in the case of a nasty spill. If you don’t know your audience, your project is doomed to fail. This is an exercise that I go through with every client before every video I create has even started. In order to review the product itself, we need to determine the audience for the product. Really, I’m the wrong guy to review this product. ![]() This will provide you with both Git and Bash in the Git Bash program. I have never had any junk on my pc from it. You can't download without Flash or Javascript enabled. Thus far out of all the Curse haters that I've seen post on any forum, they haven't posted a single legitimate reason not to like them. I have roughly 10 addons over there, and I don't have any issues with them whatsoever. Weather an addon is Ace or not is a personal preference because there is nothing wrong with an Ace addon that's been properly written, so that last remark sounded more like an attack than anything else. I've been using the curse client since it was in beta, and it's never once downloaded "junk" onto my pc, nor has it downloaded anything that I didn't ask for or put a check-mark by because it was an option. Thanks for reading, I'll keep tabs on Minion, but for now it doesn't aid my addon updating as I would like it to.
